Rajasthani Women
India was a visual feast, like being at the Houston Quilt Show all day every day for a month, only better. Ultimately I hope the snapshots and fabrics I've brought back from two visits will inspire a lot of pieces, but so far this is the only one I've made, and that was because a good friend asked for it.
Here's the original photo - just a quick snapshot taken in passing, through the open car window, somewhere between Udaipur and Jodhpur.
In this detail you can see most of how the piece was made. Cheesecloth overlaid on strip patchwork was used to simulate the barren, dusty background; the sari-draped figure is indicated by an applique of sheer Indian bandhini (tie-dye) fabric; the fabric roll that supports the pot, and the arms and hands, are embroidered; the pot is an appliqued piece of gold handmade paper; and the bangles are indicated by very simple seed bead stitching.
